What is HK100 Flex?

The HK100 Ultra Trail Race, which is held in January each year, has been cancelled.  HK100 Flex is a call to everyone to continue to train / run / hike / connect wherever you are in the world.  HK100 Flex is not a competition or a trial.  It is our way of giving you a little nudge to stay fit and strong and continue to pursue your personal trail running goals in these difficult times.

What does HK100 Flex take place?

You need to complete HK100 Flex between 16 January and 15 February 2021.

What do I receive by joining Flex?

1.  Welcome Pack

IF YOU LIVE IN HONG KONG

This includes:

  • Kailas Flex tee shirt (if you sign up before 30 November) OR See-Through Dry Sack 3L + Soft Flask (if you sign up after 30 November)
  • Visor
  • Bandana
  • Overstim.s Red Tonic gel
  • Beer Voucher for use at the kiosks at Pak Tam Chung or Tai Mo Shan Visitor Centre (a.k.a. "Connie's Kiosk") (finish points of The Half and the HK100 course)
  • a Flex Number Tag

IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE HONG KONG

You will receive all of the above other than the Overstim.s red tonic gel and the beer voucher.

2. Commemorative award

If you complete the course, you will receive a commemorative award in the form of either a trophy or a medal / points / ballot ticket etc (see below).

What commemorative award do I get?

Would I get any UTMB running stones?

UPDATED ON 25.11.2020
If you complete HK100 Flex full course or The Half Flex in Hong Kong in one go, you will be awarded 3 stones.

Note: We have been given a fixed number of stones by UTMB to give out to those completing the original courses in HK in one go.  Stones will be provided based on your date of registration for Flex on a first come, first guaranteed basis.  Another reason to hurry up and register!

UPDATED ON 29.11.2020

If you complete both HK100 Flex and The Half Flex in Hong Kong in one go, you will only be awarded 3 (and not 6) stones.

For more information about how to use UTMB running stones, please click here.

Does joining Flex allow me to have a guaranteed entry to the 2022 edition?

No it doesn't.  However, you will have a ticket to join the ballot for places in the 2022 edition of the event.

For which 2022 HK100 event can I use my ballot ticket?

If you complete HK100 Flex full course (in or outside Hong Kong, in one go or in stages), you will have a ticket for the 2022 HK100 Full course ballot.

If you complete The Half Flex (in or outside Hong Kong, in one go or in stages), you will have a ticket for the 2022 The Half ballot.

No fees or donation is required for these ballot tickets.

Can I still enter the ballot for the 2022 edition when it opens even though I will already have a ballot ticket by joining Flex?

Yes.  You can effectively double your chances of being drawn by entering the 2022 ballot again through the normal way when ballot registration opens.  This is usually subject to a charitable donation with details to be announced closer to the time of ballot registration.

I live in Hong Kong.  When can I collect the welcome pack and commemorative award?

Commemorative awards can be collected from 1 February onwards, subject to your results having been submitted and verified by RaceTimingSolutions.

When can I register?

Registration starts on Tuesday 10 November and will continue until 11 February.  However, we are only able to guarantee a Flex T shirt as gift if you register before 30 November (due to production schedules).  Also, only those who register before 30 November will be able to pre-order the souvenir T shirt and souvenir hoody.

What is the registration fee?

The registration fee is HK$398 (non-refundable).

Can I join both HK100 Flex and The Half Flex?

Absolutely!  However, you may only record your run / hike for one of the challenges at any one time and may not count it concurrently for both challenges.

Can I complete Flex in stages?

Yes you can and there is no limit on the number of stages.  So please feel free to take your time!

Do I have to do the stages in sequence?

No if you are not planning to complete in one go.  For example, with the full course, you can start with Shing Mun Reservoir to the Finish in Week 1, Kei Ling Ha to Shing Mun Reservoir in Week 2, then Start to Kei Ling Ha in Week 3 etc.

Do I have to follow the original courses?

If you live in Hong Kong – yes.  You must follow the HK100 course or the course of The Half.

If you live outside Hong Kong – no.

I live overseas.  How can I take part in HK100 Flex?

You can take part by completing the distance and elevation gain of the HK100 courses on any route you choose.

If you cannot integrate the elevation gain, you can convert the HK100 courses into “kilometres-effort”.

For any gain of 100m in elevation, one kilometre is added to the distance of the route. So, for example, 53 km will be added if the elevation gain is 5300 m.

HK100 course = 103 km + 5300 m = 156 kilometres-effort

The Half = 56 km + 2010 m = 76 kilometres-effort

Can I have support along the way?

Absolutely.  Pacers and supporters are allowed, as long as you abide by any relevant social distancing / gathering rules.

Is towing (pulled along with a rope) allowed?

No

What are the technical steps that I need to take?

1. Register online
2. Receive an edit code
3. Make sure your gps watch battery lasts sufficiently long for your session
4. Go to start of the route, take a photo and start tracking with your gps watch
5. At various points along the route take another photo (all photos should include face and local landmark). Exact points to be notified in due course.
6. Arrive at finish, stop tracking with your watch and take a photo
7. Upload your track to the gps watch manufacturer’s web site
8. Go to the Results Entry page to enter your elapsed finish time and your edit code
9. Enter the link to your track and upload the photos
10. Check that your unranked result is displayed on the results page
11. Wait for results verification to see your ranked result

Can I participate without a GPS watch?

Although theoretically it is possible to track an activity using an app (such as Strava) on your smart phone, please keep in mind that it reduces the battery’s discharge rate significantly while running such app.  Therefore, you should not use a phone app to track your activity as it is unlikely that the battery will last for the entire duration of the activity (except where it is only for a few hours).
